NEW
- and news - THIS WEEK
~ Autumn is approaching and it is
the last week of summer...and potatoes! Autumn
is coming quickly, and we can’t wait for those cool weather crops to ripen, but
we do like potatoes and melons...such a conundrum! We were fortunate to enjoy spring and summer
crops at the same time this year, maybe the hot weather and cold weather crops
of summer and fall can find themselves on our plates at the same time soon,
too? Potatoes don’t care about the
temperature, but as soon as the sun starts setting earlier and earlier, they
prepare for winter and if you want to enjoy fresh potatoes, you’d better get
them now and not hope for a warm fall.
Also, be sure
to get a melon! Or
ten. Or twenty. Goodness, they’re numerous and delicious!
To our
subscribers: don’t forget that you can order multiple boxes at once! It’s the
best time of the year for fresh produce, and we encourage you to take advantage
of it by getting two, three, or four boxes at once! Also, take advantage of our sale on
produce! If you are ordering in a box,
we’ll decrease it’s per bushel equivilant by the amount the item is on sale.
A DELICIOUS
RECIPE YOU SHOULD TRY:
We just tried
this recipe and loved it so much.
Combine 2 cups of Coastalfields Salad Mix, 1 small yellow squash, 1
small zucchini, 1 large daikon radish, 4 small potatoes, 3 “boiler” small
onions, 1 leek, 1 Tablespoon of olive oil, ½ Tablespoon of rice vinegar and 3-5
tablespoons of “Herbs De Provence” into a pan filled with water. Boil until soft (about an hour) and serve
with a bit of lemon juice sprinkled on top.
BE SURE TO STOP EATING BEFORE YOU POP!
BIG Watermelon: $20/ea (for subscriptions and boxes, fills ¼ bushel). average size 20 lb,
with seeds. These won’t last - get them
while you can!
***LAST WEEK FOR
POTATOES*** $4.60/lb. Red skinned white flesh, all white, and all
red.
and don’t forget...
Andujo Natural Beef: NOT USDA CERTIFIED. What does “not USDA certified” mean? USDA certification requires that the animal
is vet-inspected within a week of slaughter, that it is slaughtered in a
certified kitchen and then inspected for disease before being packaged for
human consumption. Andujo Natural Beef
is vet inspected within a month of slaughter, slaughtered in a certified
kitchen, but not inspected for disease before being packaged for animal
consumption. We are excited to say that
Andujo Natural Beef is diversifying production this autumn into USDA
slaughtered beef, but are more pleased still to offer his fine animal feeds.

TRY THESE FRESH GRAINS FROM OUR
NEIGHBORS, TOO!
Because in the past we have been unable to produce enough grains
to supply your demands, we work with other local farmers to provide you with
grains. These grains sometimes have been
grown with limited herbicide, pesticide and fertilizer. If you are concerned about what has been
applied to our neighbors’ crops, ask us and we’ll be able to tell you.

NOTE ON STEEL CUT GRAINS. Because
in the past we have been unable to produce enough grains to supply your
demands, we work with other local farmers to provide you with grains. These grains sometimes have been grown with
limited herbicide, pesticide and fertilizer.
If you are concerned about what has been applied to our neighbors’
crops, ask us and we’ll be able to tell you.
FAQ: Why are our neighbors’ crops cheaper? Answer: Though their production methods are
more costly, they produce their grains on a much larger scale than we do, and
thereby are able to decrease their marginal costs of production.

you like!
Chicken Eggs:
$4.60/dozen (for subscriptions and boxes, 1 dozen = 1/32 bushel)
We are now offering pastured, antibiotic free,
natural eggs from our neighbor’s birds! These eggs may be included in the standard
chicken dozen (for subscription and
box customers: 1 dozen = 1/32 bushel):
Quail $6.50/dozen (add to standard dozen for
$0.15/egg)
Duck $6.50/dozen (add to standard dozen for
$0.15/egg)
Goose (limited supply available) $8/dozen
(add to standard dozen for $0.30/egg)
Our birds are not only cage free, but are fence-free,
able to wander wherever they please.
Their wings and talons have not been clipped, the roosters are not
killed because of their sex (roosters help protect hens from foxes, coyotes,
feral cats and other predators, after all!) and when the chickens grow too old
to profitably lay eggs, they are retired and not killed. They are fed on grass pasture and whole
grains grown at Coastalfields. They are
never given any hormones to help them lay more eggs, and are only given antibiotics
when it would be cruel to otherwise not provide medicine. Our veterinarians are directed to make all
efforts– even if it is unprofitable to do so – to preserve the bird’s life and
health because we believe that it is our obligation to care for our
domesticated animals to the full extent possible.
DAIRY
Goat milk
from Delve Farms: $8/half gallon (yes, you can buy milk in smaller or larger
quantities than 1/2gallon!)
BEE
PRODUCTS
Bee products are included in the price
of boxes and subscriptions at the exchange rates provided – order as many or as
few as you like!
Our bees are allowed to
collect honey from the many wild and domesticated plants on and around our
farm. We use no pesticides on their
hives. Unlike some other apiaries, we
allow the colonies to produce as many queens, drones and workers as they like
because we believe that the bees are better able to structure the sexual makeup
of their colony than we are. We never
subject the bees to inhumane treatments such as oxygen deprevation during
transportation, the murdering of hatched and unhatched queens or drones, or the
overpopulation of our acreage (which would lead to wars between colonies for
the resources). When honey is collected,
it is free of unhatched eggs. We ensure
that most of their pasture (the bees will travel sometimes even 10 miles away,
but we have control over only the surrounding acreage) is free of pesticide,
herbicide and fertilizer.
